On December 20, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was signed, confirming the transfer of the former French colony to the United States. Statehood, however, was not immediate. For nearly 10 years, Louisiana was entrenched in a turbulent period, rife with political disputes and culture clashes. The exhibition Between Colony & State: Louisiana in the Territorial Period, 1803-1812, and its companion online component, examines the people, places, and events that shaped this fascinating period. Highlights include manuscript maps, newspapers from the period, and artists' depictions of life during this time.

The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is proud to participate in "¡Sí Cuba!" a major citywide presentation of arts, music, and culture related to Cuba taking place in New Orleans January through April 2010. ¡Sí Cuba! is a collaborative venture between museums, universities, galleries, and other arts organizations in New Orleans, co-organized by NOMA, Newcomb Art Gallery, and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University. NOMA's participation in ¡Sí Cuba! includes two exhibitions: Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana, a solo exhibition of paintings and Polaridad Complementaria: Recent Works from Cuba, a traveling show organized by the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam, Havana. Polaridad Complementaria will be co-presented at the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University.

The solo exhibition Luis Cruz Azaceta: Swimming to Havana will feature a suite of new paintings, all from 2009. The phrase "Swimming to Havana" proposes the impossible as no unassisted human is capable of traversing ninety miles across the Caribbean Sea from Florida to Cuba. Yet it is a journey said to have taken place countless of times in the minds of Cubans wishing to reach the United States, and Cuban immigrants dreaming of returning home. In his suite of new paintings, Azaceta invites viewers to undertake their own imaginative journeys through his imagery. These paintings explore the idea of "crossing over" in myriad ways: between abstraction and figuration, between geometric and organic forms, between Cuban and American culture, and between the historically linked cities of New Orleans and Havana.

Every Thursday Big Freedia and DJ Rusty Lazer along with other local bounce artists hit the stage at The Hookah. If you're wondering what is bounce, here is what Wikipedia has to say about Bounce Music: Bounce music is an energetic style of "New Orleans hip hop" music which is said to have originated as early as the late 1980s, but is typically believed to have begun with the 1991 single "Where Dey At by MC T.Tucker. A highly influential cover of "Where Dey At" was also released by "DJ Jimi in 1992.

Bounce is characterized by "Call and response" style party and Mardi Gras Indian chants and dance call-outs. These chants and call-outs are typically sung over the Triggerman beat, which is sampled from the song "Drag Rap" by the Showboys, or Brown beat, which is sampled from Derek B's "Rock The Beat". The sound of bounce has primarily been shaped by the recycling and imitation of the "Drag Rap" sample: its opening chromatic tics, the intermittent shouting of the word "break", the use of whistling as an instrumental element (as occurs in the bridge), the "drag rap" vocals and its brief and repetitive melody and quick beat (which were produced with use of Synthesizers and drum machines and are easily sampled or reproduced using like-sounding elements).

The genre maintains widespread popularity in New Orleans, LA and the southern United States and has a more limited following outside of the Deep South. Throughout this decade, the "Take Fo'" record label has dominated the genre with artists such as "DJ Jubilee and "Willie Puckett." Katey Red, "Big Freedia" and "Sissy Nobby have also made significant contributions.

Join us for the Opening Reception for Aïda Ruilova: The Singles 1999 - Now. Combining classical cinematic devices with a distinctively jarring, low-tech sensibility, New York-based artist Aïda Ruilova creates dark, narrative video work. Aïda Ruilova: The Singles 1999 - Now presents a survey of the artist's single-channel video work since 1999. Ruilova is one of a young generation of artists who employ media in innovative ways with a do-it-yourself aesthetic, often drawing upon contexts - like cinema, music, and popular culture - that exist outside the art world. Her short video loops often feature characters performing cryptic and physically uncomfortable actions, revealing her fascination with the conjunction of horror movie aesthetics and the sublime. A compelling, though obscured, narrative is created, overwhelming the viewer with questions. Unidentified, Ruilova's characters and their relationships remain ambiguous, and the viewer is left to actively detangle the action.

Ruilova's works have a strong formal and associative relationship to music. Ruilova, a classically trained musician, was a member of the experimental music group Alva. Her videos feature visceral experiences of discrete sounds - among them evocative phrases muttered repetitively, heavy breathing, scrunching guitar strings, and vinyl LPs being scraped across cement - that reinforce both the physicality of her editing and the isolation, claustrophobia, and extreme psychological stresses of contemporary life that are alluded to throughout her work.

On January 30, New Orleans Museum of Art will kick off the 2010 contemporary exhibition schedule with a celebration of New Orleans artists Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Widely known for multimedia performances in music clubs and alternative art spaces over the past 15 years, Quintron and Miss Pussycat have inspired audiences around the world with their innovative approach to puppetry and organ-based music. Parallel Universe: Quintron and Miss Pussycat Live at City Park will be the artists' first museum exhibition. In addition to past work, Miss Pussycat will debut a new music video, and an original music album by Quintron will be recorded entirely on-site at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Parallel Universe: Quintron and Miss Pussycat Live at City Park is organized by Miranda Lash, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The exhibition will begin with a vibrant and comprehensive display of Miss Pussycat's puppetry, a "parallel universe" the artist creates and channels within her set designs and performances. Hundreds of her puppets will take over the first gallery, spanning the length of Miss Pussycat's career. Arranged in miniature landscapes, her handmade puppets fuse the surreal and fantastical with a dose of whimsy. Functional in purpose and beguiling in form, the puppets enact scenes laden with satire, humor, and wit, while appearing innocent and child-like. Describing the puppets as "portals to the spirit world," the artist explains that the ritual of making a puppet show allows the puppets to assume a life of their own. Her versatile working method as a puppeteer ranges from swiftly arranging puppet shows for rock concert stages, to painstakingly directing videos with large support crews and arranging prerecorded soundtracks. Miss Pussycat's presentation will include the debut of her latest puppet video.

Oak Alley Plantation is  pleased to announce its  Spring Arts & Crafts Festival.More than 170 booths of juried artists and crafters from throughout the United States. Coming from as far away as California, Missouri and Tennessee, to as close as Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, and our own local artisans from Louisiana. Oak Alley's show prides itself in selecting crafters with the most unique items to sell. We also limit each booth to selling items from only two categories. We have made it our mission to continue to have a high quality Festival that only handcrafted, original items are allowed to be sold by exhibitors. More specifically, the items must be hand-made by the exhibitor, themselves and the exhibitor must be on hand to talk about his craft during the show. "Secret Shoppers" roam the Festival to ensure that crafters are following the rules.

Some unique items such as mixed media 2-D art, garden & folk art, stained glass, Louisiana Mud Paintings, pen and ink drawings, watercolor prints, copper fountains, sculptured resin dolls, gourmet jellies & pickles will be on display for sale. And of course, we will have on hand original and handmade creations such as jewelry, furniture, clothing, home accessories, paintings, photography, pottery, wooden crafts and toys. You will also find gifts to give for Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day. And don't forget, for all those sports fans we will have plenty of LSU and Saints memorabilia!

The composer's own stormy sea voyage from Germany to England may have provided impetus for his inspired treatment of the famous legend. The Flying Dutchman, having struggled to round the Cape of Good Hope during a whirling gale, recklessly swears to complete the task, even if it takes an eternity. He is condemned by the forces of darkness to sail until Judgment Day, unless he meets a woman willing to die in order to save him. Permitted to land only once every seven years to seek redemption, the Dutchman's ship docks in a Norwegian coastal town where he encounters Senta. Already obsessed with the gloomy myth, she is torn between her lover Erik, and the compelling, mysterious stranger. Wagner's wild and haunting opera, first heard in 1843, is his earliest work to be performed regularly worldwide. Don't miss this powerful close to our season!

In the winter of 1910, the great flood of the Seine ravaged Paris and brought widespread destruction to one of the world’s most beloved cities. Now on the 100th anniversary of the flood, historian Jeffrey H. Jackson will share the story of Paris with the city of New Orleans, when he discusses his book Paris Under Water: How the City of Light Survived the Great Flood of 1910 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) at The Historic New Orleans Collection on Saturday, March 27. Jackson, a professor of history at Rhodes College in Memphis, was recently honored as one of the top young historians in the United States and was a consultant for the documentary, “Harlem in Montmartre: A Paris Jazz Story” on PBS.

In Paris Under Water, he ushers readers through the ordeal via relief aid and press coverage, including the dismissal by most residents of early reports of rising water and the failure of infrastructure. This book signing and presentation with Jeffrey H. Jackson has been made possible with support from Alliance Française de la Nouvelle-Orléans. The event will be held at The Collection’s Royal Street complex, 533 Royal Street, and will begin at noon on Saturday, March 27, during the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival. Guests are welcome to bring their lunches to the event, where beverages will be provided. Copies of the book will be available at The Shop at The Collection for $27.
